People used to buy bootleg CDs and Japanese imports containing music that none of their friends could get hold of. Now that almost every track is available free on music-streaming services like Spotify or on a pirate website, music fans need something else to boast about. That limited-edition 12-inch in translucent blue vinyl will do nicely.

Vinyl is back. In America vinyl sales are running 39% above last year’s levels. (via theeconomist)

I think this is true, but only to a small effect. I’ve started collecting vinyl this past year for a different, more purposeful listening experience. But I also know that vinyl sales are so low to begin with that a 39% increase isn’t that incredible.

Those of us that value music in this way are fewer and further between, otherwise we would have seen a rise in box set sales and other collectible items. The younger generation of fans that have developed their tastes in music entirely in a post Napster decade never experienced the thrill of the search.

Instead, faced with virtually infinite access to endless numbers of bands, becoming a taste maker or filter for your social group is the new boast. And how do you boast about it? Post the bands album on your blog, available as a free download for your friends.

Those of us that grew up buying music are reaching the age of having more disposable income, and getting a turntable and a cool vinyl collection is a fun way to spend some money, but I think the trend will be short lived. Younger generations just don’t give music that much tangible value, and as much as I hate to say it, I think Spotify (and similar services) are only reinforcing that idea.
